Stevie

Nightclubs were a staple in Stevie’s life for as long as she could remember. Until recently, it was rare that she wasn’t at one on a Friday or Saturday night. After Chloe ended things, she continued to frequent them, but after a month, she stopped. It was much harder to enjoy herself when she had no interest in flirting or hunting down the next woman she would take to her bed.

Lily on the Ave was one of the few lesbian bars in the city. She rarely went because it was usually extra busy on the weekends, and she found it annoying. But when Chloe invited her out with a few of her friends, she couldn’t say no. They had begun seeing each other again regularly, and she didn’t want to miss an opportunity for them to spend time together. She was also curious about meeting more of her friends.

Stevie pushed through the crowd of bodies, trying not to spill the glasses in her hand. She finally made it through and placed the drinks on the table in front of Chloe and her two friends from college, Cara and Debbie. Cara was a petite blonde with big brown eyes and a heart-shaped face. She had traces of a southern accent almost gone from years of living in Boston, but it gave her a pleasant lilt. Her demeanor was very much friendly and open. Debbie was the exact opposite, tall with jet black hair and lightly tanned skin; she was quiet mostly. Her almond-shaped eyes were always observing everything and everyone around them. When she talked, her voice was low and gravelly like she smoked a pack of cigarettes every day.

“Okay, I have two vodka cranberries and a gin and tonic.” Stevie distributed the drinks, then slid in between Chloe and Cara.

“You aren’t drinking?” Chloe said, leaning into her ear.

“No, I’ve cut back. Not really into it as much as used to be.”

Chloe gave her a surprised look but said nothing else.

“So Stevie, I hear you have your tattoo shop; how long have you been doing that?” Cara asked.

“We’ve had the shop for about four years, and I’ve been tattooing for around seven.”

Cara nodded approvingly. “That’s awesome. You’re so young to be a business owner, I’m impressed.”

“Thank you. What about you and Debbie, what do you two do?”

Debbie sipped her drink. “I’m an accountant, the least exciting job on earth. But I’m good at it and make decent money.”

Cara’s perky voice jumped in. “Debbie’s modest. She works for a Fortune 500 company and makes six figures. Decent my ass.”

Debbie rolled her eyes. “Maybe you should slow down on the drinking, Cara. Your mouth gets loose when you have too much.”

“That’s not the only thing,” Cara mumbled, just loud enough for Stevie to hear because she was sitting next to her.

When she looked over at her, Cara gave her a wink. Stevie turned to Chloe to see if she caught the flirtatious move, but her face was glued to her phone.

Cara grabbed some food from the middle of the table.
